  1. this might be the largest show-off of ignorance

  2. if hikaru was playing this on stream and went : "ooh he's stream sniping" I'd lose my shit

  3. it seems like the board is what complicated the game. if we just have coordinates it should be much easier to understand like check this out, each piece has coordinates (a,b,c,d,e). if you want to move n hypercubes in one direction (like the rook) you just add n to one coordinate (a,b,c+n,d,e). if you want to move n hypercubes diagonally I think you add n to 2 coordinates (a+n,b+n,c,d,e) and the knight can move 2 squares in 1 direction and 1 in an another direction (a+2,b,c,d+1,e). I think it becomes much clearer than using time as an a dimension.

  4. Wait.what is the fifth dimension.2 are space and the third is time what are the other two

  5. It’s so frustrating. It’s not that complicated. How does he not get it????

  6. Our lord Charlie understood this before it was created.

  7. hikaru cannot understand 5 dimencional piece movement, such a rookie

  8. he goes to the rules and reads 4 words of each paragraph, doesn't understand

  9. "I think i got a good undertanding of how this game works"
"whait why the knight doesn't move in an L shape?" "(I guess I will ignore it)"

  10. The fact that he couldn’t understand that he was getting checked in the past, and the present doesn’t matter if the king in the past is in check mate was so frustrating

  11. "the king is in check in multiple dimensions"

    GM Hikaru Nakamura

  12. When we were kids we make up rules like this 😂😂😂😂😂

  13. I watched 2 minutes of this and just noped out haha

  14. This wouldn’t be so bad or hard to understand if the rules were actually game friendly.

  15. 27:59 pardon my french is typically for the f bomb, its a legit french word

  16. Hikaru "I think I've got this" Nakamura

  17. You can't move the king in the past because that is not an active board.

  18. I suck at proper chess but I'm actually pretty good at 5d chess for some reason. Mainly because it's so unlike chess that it's closer to an interdimensional grand strategy game than chess

  19. How does he not get it 😭😭😭😭

  20. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. This Grandmaster understnds 3d chess at an intuitive level, but is making assumptions that are unwarrented. It is clear that he does not understand how the pieces move when the time travel comes into play,… he did not understand that the Knight can Move one board or two boards to the past and then complete with 2 squares or one square in any 2d direction. Then that was exacerbated by the fact that he did not understand when pieces in the present were attacking the King in the past, which can no longer move, since pieces in the past cannot move.

If a past king is attacked by a piece in the present the only options are capture the attacking piece,… Move the king but he is not realizing that the king can simply Move one board to the past, and escape what seems Like a standard 2 rooks vs king mate,…. he needs to learn how to pace his rook on a square that the King used to be in.

Hikaru is a Grandmaster at 3d chess,…. but Like Khan Noonian Singh in "The Wrath of Khan" is not understanding an extra dimension, In this case, the Time Dimension.

I will say that while Hikaru is struggling at this, I am sure that if this evver achieves the popularity it deserves and he gives it any time, soon we may see amazing games from people like Hikaru.

What I do like is,…. it seems we are all starting from square one… ( no pun intended ) so like in "The Wrath of Khan" those that can better enivisage time travel and Multi-dimension travel will do better than stronger chess players that cannot think 5 dimensionally.

Even if this game does not become popular, I am glad it exists, because like the book "Flatland" It serves excellently to explain Time Travel, and alternate timelines.

For those saying the game is stupid,…. maybe some people just need to learn to think 5 dimensionally to see it's brilliance.

  21. He speed runs through the rules assuming he will understand, and fails to realize that Time and Multiverse boards change the movement of pieces significantly. He says " I know what checkmate is." and he does,….. in standard 3d chess. The issue is, he did not understand how a knight 2 spaces in front of the enemy king mated a king in the past that because it was in the past,….could not move.

He did not understand that putting a rook or a queen, on a square that had been occupied by the enemy king in the past is instant mate since the king in the past cannot move.

He keeps focusing on the board he was always on, failing to realize the new " present" is in the past,…. and his moves are taking place in the future.

His amazing prowess at standard chess, is hurting him, because he will not stop…. to read the figgen rules… then stumbles through the game going " wait what??? what???"

This is what happens when someone sits to play standard chess, but does not un derstand the rules to standard chess.

I notice a Lot of people saying that the game sucks. I think it is possible people think it sucks because they cannot think 5 dimensionally.

  24. Your not supposed to understand. It's a fact that when you play 5D chess, you'll be constantly saying either "I won?" or "I lost?" and be looking through 100 different chess boards to figure out wtf happened.

  25. Watching a chess master fail the tutorial is pretty cathartic

  26. 5D chess is hard
the knight moves weirdly through time
    it hurts my braincells

    i made a haiku 🙂

  27. Even grandmaster didnt understand 5D movement, big brain tim🤯🤯🤯

  28. Whoever thought of this game is a moron

  29. "I thought the puzzles were pretty clear" – after ragequitting every puzzle

  30. Apparently everyone in the fucking comments is 3000 ELO at 5D chess. Congrats youtube, you finally got one on Hikaru.

  31. Hmm… Just a thought, but in theory, a knight should be able to move two steps up and one step into the future as well, right? But that bit seems left out of the game. Does a regular 2D move also include a 1 step into the future, in which case he knight would actually allowed to move 2-1-1 and not just a 2-1. Future time travel left out for the sake of simplicity or what?

  32. I've never watched a tutorial where once I finished watching, I was as clueless as I am now.

  33. 12:19 Hikaru skips the "What is checkmate?" screen, but it actually explains how checkmate is DIFFERENT in 5D chess!

  34. Watching a GM struggle is very satisfying, I must say

  35. Watching Hikaru figure this out helped me figure it out lol
